I stayed in the Goto Islands in Nagasaki for one month as part of an artist-in-residence program and held a solo exhibition there.
The islands of Goto are home to a deep history of "Hidden Christians" (Kakure Kirishitan) who kept their faith in secret for centuries. Today, you can find beautiful historic churches scattered all across the islands, standing as silent witnesses to their devotion.
I had never stayed long-term anywhere in Japan outside of Tokyo before, so being able to connect with people on the island was a really valuable experience.
I first stayed in Goto about five years ago, and those memories are now the inspiration for a large-scale tapestry I’m working on. Although I finished a few pieces during my latest visit, I’m still in the middle of production for an exhibition coming up in a few years
長崎の五島列島で1ヶ月間、アーティスト・イン・レジデンスとして滞在し、個展を開催しました。
五島にはたくさんの教会があります。それは、かつて「潜伏キリシタン」の人々がこの地で強く生きた証。今でも島の人々の暮らしの中に、祈りの風景が溶け込んでいます。
これまで日本国内で東京以外に長期滞在した経験がなかったため、島の方々と繋がりを持てたことは、私にとって非常に貴重な体験となりました。
実は5年ほど前にも一度五島を訪れたことがあり、当時の記憶をインスピレーションに大きなタペストリーを制作しています。今回の滞在中にも数点、新作を仕上げましたが、数年後にまた同じ場所で展示を行う予定があるため、現在も五島での思い出を形にした作品を編み進めています。
